Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about roofing services across Newcastle NSW.
Can my roof be restored, or does it need replacing?
It depends on what is under the surface. Concrete and terracotta tiles that are mostly sound, with tired ridge mortar and a faded surface, usually restore well. Metal with surface rust restores well; metal rusted through, or a roof with rotten battens and widespread leaks, is usually better replaced. We tell you which after looking at it, with photos.
Is the inspection and quote free?
Yes. Free on-site inspection and a free quote for roofing work. Specialist written reports, such as pre-purchase, strata or commercial roof reports, are a separate service and we will tell you the cost before booking one.
Do you work on both tile and metal roofs?
Yes. We restore, repair and replace concrete tile, terracotta tile and metal roofs, and install new metal and tile roofs on new builds and extensions. We supply Colorbond and Lysaght steel for metal roofing, gutters and flashings.
What warranty do you give?
We offer a 10-year workmanship warranty. It covers workmanship, not materials. Materials and coatings carry their own manufacturer warranties, which we explain where they apply.
Can you help with a storm damage insurance claim?
Yes. After a storm we can make the roof safe where possible and prepare a written storm damage report describing what we found and, where the roof shows it, the likely cause. Your insurer decides the claim; our report gives them clear evidence to assess.
What areas do you cover?
Newcastle and its suburbs, Lake Macquarie (including Belmont, Cardiff, Swansea and Toronto), Port Stephens (including Nelson Bay and Raymond Terrace), Stockton, Maitland, Cessnock and the wider Hunter Valley. We are based in Newcastle.
What are your hours?
We work Mon to Sat: 7:30am to 5:30pm. Call (02) 4047 0860 or send the form and we will get back to you.
Do I need council approval to work on my roof?
Like for like repairs and restorations usually do not. Changing the roof material, colour or form can need approval if the home is heritage listed or sits in a heritage conservation area, which applies to parts of Newcastle, Maitland and Raymond Terrace among others. Check with your council for your address before a material change; we match profiles and details to what is approved.
My home is in a bush fire prone area. Does that change the roof?
It can. Not every home is bush fire prone, so check your council's mapping first. Where a property is, the bushfire attack level can affect sarking, ember sealing, gutter guards and other details on new roofs and replacements. We work to the level stated for the site.
What if my roof has asbestos?
Fibrous cement roof sheeting on older homes may contain asbestos. We do not pressure clean, cut or coat it. It needs testing, and removal by a licensed asbestos removalist, before any re-roofing. We can quote the new roof once that is arranged.
What happens if it rains during a restoration?
Coatings need dry weather and curing time, so rain pauses the job. The roof is left watertight at the end of every working day, and we pick up again as soon as the surface has dried. The job simply takes a little longer.
How does your quote work?
You get a written quote after the inspection that lists each item of work and its price. If we find something on the day that was not visible at inspection, such as rotten battens under the tiles, we stop, show you, and agree on it before doing extra work.
Do I need to be home during the work?
Not usually. We need access to the roof and a power point, and ideally the cars moved from the driveway on the busy days. We will want to walk through the finished job with you at the end.
Do you clean up afterwards?
Yes. Old mortar, broken tiles, screws, offcuts and wash water are cleaned up as the job goes, and gutters are cleared at the end. Removed roofing from a replacement is taken away.
How soon can you start?
It depends on the season and the size of the job. Leaks and storm damage are prioritised, and we can often make a roof safe quickly while the full repair is scheduled. Call (02) 4047 0860 for current lead times.
