Metal Roofing Newcastle

Metal roofing covers a range of materials and profiles, and the right combination depends on the house, the pitch and how close it sits to the salt air. We supply Colorbond and Lysaght steel, and this page explains the choices: prepainted steel, unpainted Zincalume, aluminium for severe coastal exposure, and the main sheet profiles. Whether your metal roof is going onto a new build, replacing an old roof or being restored, the material decisions start here.

Choosing metal for a Newcastle roof

Metal roofing is popular around Newcastle for good reasons. It is light, it handles low pitches and complex roof shapes, it sheds rain quickly, and it comes in a wide colour range. The decisions that matter most are the material and grade, the profile, and how the fixings, flashings and gutters are matched to the sheets. Location plays a big part. A house a few streets back from the beach or close to the harbour sees far more airborne salt than one in the western suburbs or the Hunter Valley, and manufacturers set their product recommendations by distance from the coast and exposure. Once you have chosen the material, the work itself falls under one of our other services: new roofs for new builds and extensions, roof replacements for re-roofing, or roof restoration for an existing metal roof that is sound but worn.

  • Light weight suits new frames, extensions and tile to metal conversions
  • Suits low pitch and skillion roofs, depending on profile
  • Wide colour range, with lighter colours reflecting more heat
  • Grade and fixings chosen to suit coastal or inland exposure

Colorbond steel

Colorbond is prepainted steel: a steel base with a metallic coating for corrosion protection, then a baked paint finish. It is one of the most widely used metal roofing products in Australia, and it comes in a broad palette of colours that suit both modern homes and period houses. For most sites the standard product is the usual choice. On exposed coastal sites, the manufacturer recommends more corrosion resistant grades, such as Colorbond Ultra, depending on how close the property is to breaking surf or calm salt water. We check the site against the manufacturer's guidance before we order, because using the wrong grade in a harsh location can shorten the life of the roof and affect the manufacturer's warranty. Colour also matters for comfort. Lighter colours reflect more of the sun's heat, which can help keep the roof space cooler.

Steel roofing and old tin roofs

Steel roofing comes in two main finishes. Zincalume is unpainted steel with a zinc and aluminium coating, giving a bright silver finish that dulls to a soft grey. Colorbond is the painted version. Many people still call any metal roof a tin roof, and on older Newcastle cottages and terraces the original tin roof is usually corrugated galvanised iron. Galvanised roofs from earlier decades have often lasted remarkably well but can now be rusting at laps, nail holes and gutter lines. Some can be restored while the steel is still sound; others are due for replacement with new steel in the same corrugated profile, which keeps the traditional look many older houses and heritage streetscapes call for. If the property is covered by heritage controls, confirm any change of material, profile or colour with council first.

Aluminium roofing

Aluminium does not rust the way steel does, which makes it worth considering for homes in the most severe marine exposure, such as sites very close to breaking surf. It is lighter than steel, but it is also softer, expands more with heat and usually costs more. Aluminium roofs need compatible fixings and careful detailing, because aluminium reacts badly with copper, lead and some other metals. For most Newcastle homes, even near the coast, the right grade of coated steel is the practical choice. We will tell you honestly whether your site justifies aluminium or whether a coastal steel grade will do the job.

Metal roof profiles

The profile is the shape of the sheet, and it affects the look, the minimum pitch and how far the sheet can span between supports. We supply Lysaght profiles, and the manufacturer sets the minimum pitch and fixing requirements for each one.

  • Corrugated (such as Lysaght Custom Orb): the classic rolled wave, suits traditional homes and coastal cottages
  • Trapezoidal rib (such as Lysaght Trimdek or Spandek): bolder square ribs, a crisper modern line and good spanning ability
  • Concealed fix (such as Lysaght Klip-Lok): no visible screws through the sheet, a clean finish and suitable for very low pitches
  • Curved or bullnosed sheets: for verandahs and feature roofs on period homes, where the profile allows it

Straight about price

What does it cost?

Metal roof pricing depends on the job. For an existing metal roof that can be restored, most metal roof restorations fall between $2,850 and $5,700, according to a September 2026 Newcastle market guide from whatsthedamage.com.au (modelled estimates, not our quotes); that scope covers cleaning, rust treatment, fixing replacement and recoating. New metal roofs and replacements are priced on the roof's size, its pitch and access, the material and grade, the profile, the condition of the frame and battens, and the flashings and gutters needed, so we do not publish a range for them. A metal roof is not necessarily cheaper than tile. Every roof is different, so your exact price is confirmed in writing after a free on-site inspection.

Questions before you enquire

Metal Roofing questions

Straight answers to what homeowners ask us most about metal roofing.

Do you supply Colorbond and Lysaght?

Yes. We supply Colorbond and Lysaght steel, including sheets, flashings, ridge capping and matching accessories, for new roofs, replacements and repairs.

Do I need a coastal grade of steel?

It depends on how close the house is to the ocean or salt water and how exposed it is. Manufacturers publish guidance by distance from the coast, and on exposed sites they recommend more corrosion resistant products such as Colorbond Ultra. We check your address against that guidance before ordering.

Is a tin roof the same as a Colorbond roof?

Not quite. Tin roof is an old name for any metal roof. Most older ones are corrugated galvanised iron. Colorbond is modern steel with a metallic coating and a baked paint finish. A new roof can keep the corrugated look while using modern steel.

Is aluminium better than steel near the beach?

For sites in severe marine exposure, aluminium can be the better choice because it does not rust. It costs more and needs careful detailing and compatible fixings. For most homes, including many near the coast, the right grade of coated steel is enough.

Are metal roofs noisy in the rain?

A metal roof installed over a condensation and insulation blanket is much quieter than an old roof with nothing underneath. Ceiling insulation helps further. Rain is still more audible than on tiles, which some people enjoy.

How do I look after a metal roof near the coast?

Rain washes most of a roof, but sheltered areas such as under eave overhangs, behind parapets and under gutters can hold salt. The manufacturer recommends rinsing those areas regularly. Keep gutters clear, and avoid letting copper pipes or lead flashings drain onto steel.

Can I put a new metal roof over my old one?

We do not recommend it. Laying new sheets over old ones can trap moisture, hide rot in the battens and create problems with fixings and flashings. Removing the old roof lets us check the frame and add sarking or a blanket.
