Gutters and Downpipes Newcastle

Gutters and downpipes do one job: move water off the roof and away from the house. When they sag, rust, block or overflow, water ends up in eaves, walls and ceilings instead. We repair and replace gutters, clean them, fit gutter guard (including ember guard where a property suits it), replace fascia covers and downpipes, and look at the whole drainage path so the fix actually works in a Newcastle downpour.

Gutter repairs

Plenty of gutter problems can be repaired without replacing the whole run. Joints that have lost their seal can be cleaned and resealed, brackets that have pulled away can be refixed or added, and a section that holds water can be adjusted so it falls to the outlet again. Small rust spots caught early can be treated. The limit is the metal itself: once a gutter is rusting through along its length, patching one hole just moves the leak along a metre.

  • Resealing leaking joints, stop ends and outlets
  • Refixing or adding brackets where a gutter sags between supports
  • Adjusting the fall so water drains to the outlet instead of pooling
  • Replacing a short damaged section where the rest of the run is sound
  • Checking the roof edge while we are up there: tiles, sheet ends and flashings that feed the gutter

Gutter replacement

New gutters are an opportunity to fix what was wrong with the old ones. We measure the runs, check the fascia and the roof area each gutter serves, and install new Colorbond steel gutters in a profile that suits the house, with brackets at proper spacing and a fall that carries water to the outlets. On older homes that is sometimes a chance to add an outlet or downpipe where one long run has always overflowed in heavy rain. Colours are chosen from the Colorbond range to match or complement the roof and trim.

  • Common profiles include quad, half round and square line, chosen to suit the style of the house
  • Gutter and downpipe colours matched to the roof and fascia
  • Old gutters removed and taken away
  • Outlet positions reviewed so long runs drain properly

Gutter cleaning and gutter maintenance

Gutter cleaning is the simplest way to prevent overflow, and it matters most on homes under or near trees, which covers a lot of streets around Lake Macquarie and the western suburbs of Newcastle. Leaves break down into a wet sludge that holds water against the metal, speeding up rust, and blocked outlets send water over the back of the gutter into the eaves. A maintenance visit is more than a scoop out: we check flow through the downpipes, look for early rust and failed joints, and flag anything on the roof edge that needs attention.

  • Leaves, sludge and debris removed from gutters and taken away rather than tipped in the garden
  • Downpipes checked for flow and cleared at the top where blocked
  • Joints, brackets and outlets checked for leaks and movement
  • A note of anything that needs repair, with photos where useful
  • How often depends on the trees around the house. Some homes need it yearly, others more often

Gutter guard

If your gutters fill with leaves, gutter guard keeps most of it out and cuts down how often they need cleaning. It is best fitted when the gutters have just been cleaned, repaired or replaced, so we can do both in one visit. Which system suits tile or metal roofs, ember guard for bush fire prone properties, and how to look after a guard are covered on our Gutter Guard page.

Fascia cover replacement and downpipe replacement

A fascia cover is the metal capping fitted over a timber fascia board to protect it and give a clean finish along the roof edge. When a cover is dented, rusted or has come loose, water can get behind it and rot the timber. We remove the damaged cover, check the timber underneath, and fit a new Colorbond steel cover in a matching colour. If the timber is soft or rotted, we tell you before closing it up, because a new cover over rotten timber will not hold brackets for long. Downpipes are often forgotten until they split, rust through at the base or overflow at the top in a storm. We replace damaged downpipes with new Colorbond steel downpipes, fitted with proper brackets and connected to the existing stormwater point. Where a roof area is draining through too few downpipes, adding one can relieve an overflowing gutter. Problems below ground, such as a blocked or broken stormwater pipe, are drainage work and a separate trade. If water is backing up from below, we will tell you so you can call the right person.

  • Dented, rusted or loose fascia covers replaced, with the timber behind checked first
  • Split, rusted or crushed downpipes replaced
  • Downpipe positions reviewed where gutters overflow in heavy rain
  • Connection to the existing stormwater point at ground level
  • Advice when the blockage sits underground rather than in the downpipe

Repair or replace your gutters?

The honest answer depends on the age and condition of the whole system, not the worst metre of it. This is how we weigh it up on site.

Straight about price

What does it cost?

We do not have a sourced guide price for gutter and downpipe work, so we will not quote a figure here. The price depends on the length of gutter involved, the number of storeys and how easy access is, the profile and colour, whether fascia timber needs attention, how many downpipes are replaced or added, and for gutter guard, the roof type and whether ember guard is needed. A clean and minor repair is a very different job from a full replacement. Your exact price is confirmed in writing after a free on-site inspection.

Questions before you enquire

Gutters and Downpipes questions

Straight answers to what homeowners ask us most about gutters and downpipes.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

It depends on the trees around your home. A house with no overhanging trees may only need a yearly clean, while homes under gums or near bushland can need it several times a year.

Why do my gutters overflow in heavy rain even when they are clean?

Common causes are a gutter without enough fall, too few outlets or downpipes for the roof area, undersized gutters or a downpipe blocked lower down. We check each of these on site.

Can you match new gutters to my roof colour?

Yes. New gutters, downpipes and fascia covers are available across the Colorbond colour range, so we can match or complement your roof and trim.

What is a fascia cover and does it need replacing?

It is the metal capping over the timber fascia board. If it is dented, rusted or loose, water can get behind it and rot the timber. We replace the cover and check the timber at the same time.

Can you fix a blocked stormwater pipe?

We clear blockages in gutters and downpipes. Blocked or broken pipes underground are drainage work for a separate trade, and we will tell you if that is where the problem is.

Will water in my yard after a flood mean my gutters have failed?

Not necessarily. Surface flooding and overland flow are separate from roof drainage. We can check whether your gutters and downpipes are doing their job, but roof work does not fix flooding from creeks or low ground.
