Gutter Guard Installation Newcastle
Gutter guard is a fine metal mesh fitted over your gutters and along the roof edge. Rain runs straight through it; leaves, twigs, seed pods and nesting birds stay out. We fit gutter guard to tile and metal roofs across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and the Hunter, choosing the system to suit your roof, your gutter profile and the trees around the house, and we fit ember guard where a property sits in a bush fire prone area. If the gutters need a clean or a repair first, we do that in the same visit.

Not sure if gutter guard is what you need?
We inspect first and tell you straight: repair, restore or replace.
What gutter guard does, and what it does not
Gutters fail slowly. Leaves settle, break down into a wet sludge and hold water against the metal, outlets block, and in the next downpour water spills over the back of the gutter into the eaves instead of down the downpipe. Gutter guard stops most of that material getting into the gutter in the first place. What reaches the mesh either blows off in the wind or washes away in rain. It is not a way to never think about your gutters again: fine grit still passes through, larger bark and seed pods can sit on top of the mesh, and a guard fitted over a gutter with no fall will not fix the fall. That is why we look at the gutters themselves before quoting a guard.
- Keeps leaves, twigs and seed pods out of the gutter and downpipes
- Stops birds, possums and rats nesting in the gutter line
- Cuts down how often gutters need cleaning, and the ladder work that comes with it
- Reduces the rust that starts under wet leaf sludge
- Does not replace a gutter that is rusted through or set without enough fall

Ember guard for bush fire prone properties
Large parts of Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and the Hunter back onto bushland, and some Newcastle suburbs border reserves. During a bushfire, embers blown ahead of the fire front land in dry leaf litter in gutters and can ignite it, and gaps at the roof edge let them into the roof space. Ember guard is a finer metal mesh, rated for use in bushfire areas, fitted to close those gaps as well as keep the gutters clear. The level of protection a property needs is set by its Bushfire Attack Level (BAL), which comes from an assessment of the site, and building work in bush fire prone areas follows the Australian Standard AS 3959. You can check whether your property is mapped as bush fire prone through your council. Ember guard is one part of preparing a home for fire season; it is not a guarantee against fire damage.
- Metal mesh only: plastic guards can melt or burn
- Fitted to close the gap between the roof covering and the gutter
- Chosen to suit the BAL for your property where one has been assessed
- If you are building or renovating, your approval documents may set the requirement; we install to them
Living with gutter guard
Well fitted metal gutter guard lasts as long as the gutter it sits on, but it still needs a look now and then. A quick visual check once or twice a year, and after a big storm, is usually enough to spot debris sitting on top of the mesh or a section that has been disturbed. Surface debris brushes or hoses off. On bush fire prone properties, make that check part of your preparation before fire season each year.
- Check once or twice a year, and after major storms
- Brush or hose off anything sitting on top of the mesh
- Check ember guard before each fire season
- Call us if a section has lifted, rather than walking on the roof to refix it
Choosing the right system for your roof
There is no single best gutter guard. The right one depends on the roof, the gutter and what falls on it. These are the situations we see most often around Newcastle and the Hunter, and what we usually suggest.
| Your property | What we usually suggest | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tile roof under gum trees | Metal mesh tucked under the bottom tiles | Holds firm under tiles and copes with fine gum leaves and bark |
| Metal roof near pines or palms | Mesh fixed to the sheet profile with matching trims | Needles and fronds are kept out without gaps at the sheet ribs |
| Home on bush fire prone land | BAL rated ember guard | Keeps embers out of the gutter and roof edge as well as leaves |
| Coastal home with little tree cover | Often no guard, just a yearly gutter check | Without leaf litter the benefit is small; we will tell you so |
| New gutters just installed | Guard fitted at the same visit | Protects the new gutter from day one and saves a second setup |

Straight about price
What does it cost?
We do not have a sourced guide price for gutter guard in Newcastle, so we will not put a figure here. What sets the price is the length of gutter being covered, whether the house is single or double storey, the roof type (tile and metal are fitted differently), whether you need standard mesh or BAL rated ember guard, and whether the gutters need cleaning or repairs first. Guarding only the sides of the house under trees costs less than the whole roof. Your exact price is confirmed in writing after a free on-site inspection.
Questions before you enquire
Gutter Guard questions
Straight answers to what homeowners ask us most about gutter guard.
Does gutter guard mean I never have to clean my gutters?
No, but it cuts the work right down. Most leaves stay out of the gutter, though fine grit still gets through and larger debris can sit on the mesh. A check once or twice a year, and after big storms, is usually enough.
Can gutter guard be fitted to my existing gutters?
In most cases, yes. The guard fits your current gutter profile. If the gutters need a clean or a repair first, we do that in the same visit. If they are rusted through, we will tell you, because a guard on a failing gutter is money wasted.
What is ember guard and do I need it?
Ember guard is a finer, bushfire rated metal mesh that stops embers settling in the gutter and entering the roof edge. It is worth considering if your property is on bush fire prone land or close to bushland. Your council's bush fire prone land mapping will show whether your property is included.
Does gutter guard work on tile roofs?
Yes. On a tile roof the mesh is tucked under the bottom row of tiles and fixed along the gutter. On a metal roof it is fixed to the sheet profile with trims. The fitting method is different, so tell us your roof type when you call.
How much does gutter guard cost?
It depends on the length of gutter, the number of storeys, your roof type and whether you need standard mesh or ember guard. We do not publish a figure without a reliable source, but the inspection and written quote are free, and guarding only the sections under trees can bring the price down.
How long does gutter guard installation take?
Most houses are done in a day. Larger or double storey homes, or gutters that need repairs first, can take longer, and we will tell you the expected time in your quote.
Will gutter guard stop birds and possums?
Yes, it closes the gutter line so birds, possums and rats cannot nest in it. That also stops the blockages and mess that nesting brings.
